Cicada Molting

Cicada is an insect of the order Hemiptera, suborder Auchenorrhyncha, in the superfamily Cicadoidea.

Physical Appearance:

  • Large eye apart on the head and usually transparent
  • well-veined wing
  • membranous front wings
  • short antennae protruding between or in front of the eyes

The adult insect, sometimes called an imago , is usually 2 to 5 cm (1 to 2 inches ) long, although some tropical species can reach 15 cm (6"), e.g. Pomponia imperatoria from Malaysia.

After mating, the female cuts slits into the bark of a twig, and into these she deposits her eggs. She may do so repeatedly, until she has laid several hundred eggs. When the eggs hatch, the newborn nymphs drop to the ground, where they burrow. Most cicadas go through a life cycle that lasts from two to five years. Some species have much longer life cycles up to 13-year life cycle depends on their species.

The insects spend most of the time that they are underground as nymphs at depths ranging from about 30 cm (1 ft ) up to 2.5 m (about 8½ ft). The nymphs feed on root juice and have strong front legs for digging.

In the final nymphal instar , they construct an exit tunnel to the surface and emerge. They then moult (shed their skins), on a nearby plant for the last time and emerge as adults. .

This picture shows the abandoned skins remain, still clinging to the bark of trees. I took these pictures during the fieldwork at Ulu Bendul, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia.

There are so many exoskeleton of Cicada after the molting process.

I got a young cicada at the tract of Ulu Bendul Waterfall.

Honey as a Medicine

Surah An-Nahl:68&69

And Lord Inspired the Bees, Saying:"Take you habitations in the mountains and in the trees and in what they erect (68). "Then, eat of all fruits, and follow the ways of your Lord made easy (for you)." There comes forth from their bellies, a drink of varying color wherein is healing for men. Penyelidikan jadi teras tugas pensyarah

Order of Insects

Phasmatodea and Orthoptera

The Orthoptera (from the Greek orthos = "straight" and pteron = "wing") are an order of insects with paurometabolous or incomplete metamorphosis, including the grasshoppers, crickets and locusts. Many insects in this order produce sound (known as a "stridulation") by rubbing their wings against each other or their legs, the wings or legs containing rows of corrugated bumps. The tympanum or ear is located in the front tibia in crickets, mole crickets, and katydids. These organisms use vibrations to locate other individuals.

The Phasmatodea are an order of insects, whose members are variously known as stick insects (in Europe), walking sticks (in the United States of America), ghost insects and leaf insects (generally the family Phyliidae). The ordinal name is derived from the Greek "phasma" meaning an apparition or phantom, and refers to the resemblance of many species to sticks or leaves.

Coleoptera

Beetles are a group of insects which have the largest number of species. They are placed in the order Coleoptera, which means "sheathed wing" and contains more described species than in any other order in the animal kingdom, constituting about twenty-five percent of all known life-forms

Lepidoptera

The order Lepidoptera is the one of the most speciose orders in the class Insecta and includes the butterflies, and moths .

Hemiptera-Cicada

Hemiptera is an order of insects, comprising around 80,000 species of cicadas, aphids, planthoppers, leafhoppers, shield bugs, and others, collectively known as the true bugs

A cicada is an insect of the order Hemiptera, suborder Auchenorrhyncha, in the superfamily Cicadoidea, with large eyes wide apart on the head and usually transparent, well-veined wings. There are about 2,500 species of cicada around the globe, and many remain unclassified. Cicadas live in temperate to tropical climates where they are among the most widely recognized of all insects, mainly due to their large size and remarkable acoustic talent

Odonata

Odonata is an order of insects, encompassing dragonflies (Anisoptera) and damselflies (Zygoptera). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odonata

Butterfly Park, Kuala Lumpur Malaysia

One such attraction is the Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park, just a stone's throw from the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park. The Butterfly Park houses more than 6,000 butterflies from 120 exotic species.

The park is an imitation of the butterfly's natural habitat. It includes more than 15,000 plants from 100 species that has been painstakingly landscaped to resemble a Malaysian rainforest atmosphere.

Contributing to the Butterfly Park's beautiful landscape is a uniquely designed hydro-pond built with a limestone path right in the centre. Surrounding this hydro-pond is a gazebo, commanding a breathtaking view.

Moth or butterfly? could someone differentiate between the moth and butterfly. both of them are lepidoptera

We can attract butterflies with a number of nectar producing plants. Butterflies prefer plants with large petals that provide a perch, though multiple small florets will also attract them. Butterflies are attracted to purple flowers, followed by yellows, pinks and whites.

life cycle and metamorphosis of Lepidoptera. too short, but too many steps.

There is a nursery and breeding area for the butterflies. The park includes both preserved and live specimens, totaling 1,230 species in all. Facilities include an informative insect museum.

There is also a souvenir shop near the exit selling lots of local handicrafts and framed butterflies and beetles. You can enjoy a glimpse of butterflies at this unique park!
